Book Review: The Dude's Guide to Manhood

In his book The Dude's Guide to Manhood, author and pastor Darrin Patrick creates a roadmap to true masculinity. Through his writing, Patrick creates a clear picture of what authentic masculinity looks like as well as how it can be achieved. The book wasn't what I thought it was going to be though (which I'll explain later), which threw me for a loop.

Why I read this book

I read this book because the subject being addressed has become an epidemic. Boys who don't know what it means to be a man. These boys then refuse to grow up and face the challenges of adulthood. I see it in my church, in my family, and mostly in my own heart. I wanted help navigating these waters for myself as well as  being better prepared to walk with others through the transition.

What I liked

The practicality of this book is incredible. It opened me up to categories that I don't normally consider, at least not the way he was talking about them. A few of the topics, I don't mind saying, made me ... uncomfortable. The kind of stuff I thought only I struggled with or was afraid to deal with. What Patrick helped me to see more clearly were my struggles and fears and how they were inhibiting my maturity and thereby harming my masculinity.

What I struggled with

From what I know of Darrin Patrick (met him once, heard him preach, and occasionally listen to podcasts), I thought I would get more Bible, more gospel. As I read chapter after chapter of qualities that make up masculinity, I thought it ... odd that a pastor wouldn't quote Scripture. The longer I read, the more frustrated I became.

Until I got to the last chapter. There, Patrick skillfully weaved all the qualities he'd been discussing and showed how Jesus is both our example and guide to experiencing those qualities in greater measure. By saving it all to the end, the point was made more poignant.

I recommend this book to men. All men. Pastors. Dads. Young men looking for their place in the world. Old men trying to figure out how to finish their race well. Men struggling. Men looking to continue to grow and mature.

Men, get this book. It will challenge and encourage you.
