I'm excited as I get the final things together for my trip to the great nation of Texas for the D6 conference. This conference is for those who are involved in children's, youth, and family ministry. It is for those of us who see Deuteronomy 6 (where they got the name from), as a call for parents to be the primary spiritual influence in the lives of their children. The church's job is to compliment what should be going on at home. For most churches we have it backwards.
These are convictions I've had for almost 12 years now, but I'm finding the further I get along this road, the harder it is to apply. So I'm going to get help, but that's not the only reason.
I'm looking forward to seeing and meeting men and woman that are "in the trenches". Some I've met, others I "know" online through their blogs and Twitter. Some of the people I'm excited to see are Matt Guevara (a local family pastor that I don't get see as often as either of us would like), Chris Spardin (a blogger whose writing I admire), and maybe even Ed Stetzer (LifeWay president and "studies" guru). You never know I'm even hoping to meet Greg Baird (another blog I regularly read and benefit from).
As a leader, I need to be growing. I need to be getting better at what I do. If I'm not, then nothing will change. I need to know how I'm not applying what I know to be true in family ministry and how to fix it. I believe this is a good place to start.
Sometimes, it's just nice to get away. I'm blessed beyond words that my wife is accompanying me (although not attending the conference). We are going a day early and staying a day late to just be together.
Getting away to conferences has a way of refreshing and refueling me. It also has a way of reminding me what's important. Come to think of it, 2 of the last 3 I've been to, have brought me to tears and have done good work in my soul.
That's why I'm going. Are you going? I'd love to hear from you so leave a comment. Or even better I'd enjoy meeting you. If you're there, look around you might just see me. If not, watch online, I hear the are live streaming the sessions. If you're involved in these areas of ministry check it out, for the good of the families of your church and the next generation.
