Pastors, of any ministry, of any church size, I've got a question for you. There is no question that Bible reading is important to our spiritual health and growth. We need to be encouraging our people to be reading. When this topic comes up, my question is:
Why do we tell people to simply read their Bibles?
The reason I ask this question is because I think it's an incomplete thought and/or needs to be explained. My greatest steps of faith have been when I've meditated on and asked questions of the text I happen to be reading.
When we just read, it's just information. But when we meditate on Scripture and ask probing questions of Scripture we allow an opportunity for the Holy Spirit to continue to transform us.
It took me a long time to figure out that reading the Bible was more involved than just reading the Bible ... if I wanted to get anything out of it.
